Teen Girl Dies in Police Car Accident
Police are searching for a driver who they say bypassed a stop sign that led to a fatal crash and ran away on foot from the accident site.
The crash took place after 8 p.m. Saturday in the intersection of Bellfort Street and Sandhurst Drive.
Police say the officer was driving the Houston Police Department car in response to a dispatch call and did not have the lights or siren activated. The police car was traveling eastbound on Bellfort Street when the car with five people darted in front of the HPD vehicle.
The officer was unable to avoid the crash into the driver’s side of the other car. The crash sent both cars into the grassy median.
A 15-year-old girl died from the crash. A 10-year-old boy was taken to Texas Children’s Hospital in serious but stable condition while a 16-year-old girl was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital – Texas Medical Center in stable condition. Another man was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital in stable condition. The HPD officer was not hurt.
