Man Accused of Shocking Acts of Elder Abuse and Torture

The trial of Cesar Ulloa, a former employee at the Calabasas Retirement Home, began this week, alleging graphic instances of elder abuse. The trial comes after a yearlong investigation conducted by Los Angeles County detectives.

Ulloa faces seven counts of elder abuse in addition to one count of torture. If convicted, Ulloa faces a possible life sentence. The prosecution’s evidence in the case includes tales of horrific abuse of residents of the Calabasas Retirement Home. One particularly disturbing act occurred when Ulloa allegedly jumped on a 78 year old woman’s chest with his knees. Another incident witnessed by a Calabasas employee involved Ulloa punching a resident in the stomach while sitting in his wheelchair. When the resident struggled for breath, Ulloa laughed and continued the abuse.

According the the California state attorney general’s office, many cases of elder abuse go unreported or even undetected.
